From 24 February to 7 March, Falun will host the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships for the fifth time. Construction work at Lugnet is now getting fully underway as the venue prepares to welcome visitors from around the world during the Championships.
— The venue will have a maximum capacity of 40,000 visitors, says Sara Tigerström Monfelt, Deputy CEO of Falun 2027.
Ticket sales for this winter’s World Championships in Falun have picked up pace significantly in recent weeks.
The maximum capacity for the venue has now been confirmed. Up to 40,000 visitors will be admitted on all competition days, with the exception of Thursday 25 February and Wednesday 3 March, when the cross-country skiers will compete in the individual sprint and team sprint respectively. On these two days, the maximum capacity will be 25,000 visitors.
There will be two main entrances to the World Championships venue at Lugnet: one just outside the Visitor Center and another outside the ice rink (Falu Expressbyrå Arena). There will also be a separate family entrance for families with children heading to Buboland, the Championships’ family area located at the athletics stadium.
Last week, construction of the grandstands around the cross-country stadium got underway. The work is being carried out by our technical supplier Hallton – read more here.
— There will be 10,000 grandstand seats around the cross-country stadium, divided into five different sections, numbered 1–5, with grandstand 1 located right by the finish line. In addition to the grandstands at the stadium, there will of course be plenty of great spectator spots along the courses, for example in the sprint climbs and at Mördarbacken, says Anna Rutkvist, Venue Manager at Falun 2027.
At the ski jumping venue, 11,000 spectators will be able to take their seats in the grandstand. Anyone with a ticket for the respective competition day will be able to watch the action from the stands. Seating will be available on a first come, first served basis, so spectators who want to secure a place in the grandstand during the ski jumping competitions are advised to arrive well in advance of the start of the event.
What if I get hungry?
There will be plenty of opportunities to buy food and drinks throughout the venue. Lunch will be served at UW-Tech Arena on all competition days between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. When purchasing your ticket, you can also pre-order your lunch, which you can then simply pick up at the restaurant when hunger strikes.
— There will also be a large food area by the bell tower, located between the cross-country and ski jumping venues, as well as a Fanzone with food and drinks outside the ice rink. In addition, there will be several kiosks around the venue, says Anna Rutkvist.
Where can I buy souvenirs?
— There will be a dedicated tent where, together with our clothing and merchandise partners adidas and INTERSPORT, you will be able to purchase Falun 2027 souvenirs as well as a selection of other products.
Where will the media and volunteers be based?
— Just as in 2015, the Media Centre will be located at Lugnet Sports Hall. Among other things, 400 workstations for media will be set up there, along with the large IBC (International Broadcast Centre) for the broadcasting companies. At Lugnet Upper Secondary School, we will have our Volunteer Centre, which will serve a total of 2,000 volunteers, as well as our transport and accreditation operations. Wherever possible, we will make use of existing buildings. However, we will need to complement these with tents, temporary buildings and mobile toilet facilities. Construction of the temporary buildings and tents will begin shortly, says Rutkvist.
The temporary buildings will primarily be used as waxing cabins and changing rooms for the participating nations.
Once the competitions are over, the celebrations continue at the Championships’ official Afterski. From 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on every competition day, the Afterski will bring a festive atmosphere to UW-Tech Arena, just a few minutes’ walk from both the ski jumping and cross-country venues.
— The Afterski is the perfect way to continue enjoying the Championships atmosphere and, of course, celebrate the successes on the competition courses. It is a place to meet up with friends, socialise and watch the highlights from the day’s competitions while enjoying a classic afterski menu. We are already seeing strong demand for Afterski tickets, so make sure to secure your place now. And we can promise high-quality entertainment on stage from three of Sweden’s biggest afterski bands: På G, Vi3 and Partypolarna, says Niclas Johansson, Head of Ceremonies at Falun 2027.
