Swedish Cross-Country Team Selected – World Championships in Falun the Major Goal

On Thursday, the Swedish cross-country skiing national team’s training squads for the upcoming season were announced, with the World Championships in Falun serving as the winter’s major highlight. The Swedish squad includes, among others, four gold medalists from this winter’s Olympic Games in Val di Fiemme.

The Swedish cross-country team is coming off two highly successful seasons, with major achievements at both the 2025 World Championships in Trondheim and the 2026 Olympic Games in Val di Fiemme.
This success has been particularly evident in the performances of the Swedish women, who claimed every gold medal at the World Championships in Trondheim and five out of six gold medals at the Olympic Games in Val di Fiemme.

The national team squad presented today is packed with medalists from the two most recent championships. No fewer than eight of the twelve athletes in the A-team training group have won medals at the last two major championships. Ebba Andersson, Maja Dahlqvist, Frida Karlsson, and Linn Svahn all won Olympic gold this winter.

However, Jonna Sundling is absent from the squad.
“After twelve years on the national team, I feel ready to explore a new path forward in my career. My decision to stand outside the training group this summer and autumn is not about disloyalty or resentment toward the federation. Quite simply, it is about giving myself the best possible conditions to succeed next season in general, and at the home World Championships in Falun 2027 in particular,” Sundling said in a press release.

Alvar Myhlback has also chosen to decline a place in the A-team in order to continue focusing on long-distance racing.

On the coaching side, a new and highly experienced name joins the team. Norwegian Egil Kristiansen has previously served as head coach of Norway’s women’s cross-country team from 2006 to 2016, and then as head coach of Norway’s men’s biathlon team from 2016 to 2026. Kristiansen will now become Sweden’s new men’s head coach alongside Lars Ljung.

“I look forward to the challenges ahead and the opportunity to work together to maximize the team’s potential, both in the short and long term. In the short term, the focus is on the home World Championships this winter, while the long-term goals include the Olympic Games in France,” Kristiansen said in a press release.

On the women’s side, Ida Ingmarsdotter and Johan Granath are extending and deepening their work with the A-team and Team Bauhaus.
“It feels incredibly fun, motivating, and exciting to continue our work with the national team women toward both the World Championships in Falun and the 2030 Olympic Games,” Johan Granath said in the press release.
