Former World Championships skier takes on sustainability role – here’s how you can contribute

Former World Championships skier Björn Sandström has been appointed Sustainability Consultant for Falun 2027.

You now have the opportunity to contribute to our sustainability work, as the Falun 2027 Organising Committee will host stakeholder dialogues in mid-August.

In April, Björn Sandström retired from elite cross-country skiing. His achievements include competing in five World Championships races (Seefeld 2019 and Oberstdorf 2021), 58 FIS Cross-Country World Cup starts and four individual Swedish Championship medals, including one gold (Skövde 2023).

Today, Björn works as a sustainability consultant at Gidås Hållbarhetsbyrå, and the 31-year-old has now been recruited as Project Manager for Falun 2027’s sustainability programme.

“Ever since Falun was awarded the 2027 World Championships, I’ve dreamed of being on the start line. This spring I ended my elite skiing career, so it won’t be as an athlete, but as Sustainability Manager instead. Being able to contribute to one of Swedish sport’s most iconic events is an incredible honour and feels truly meaningful. I love skiing and snow, and one of the causes closest to my heart is climate action. My ambition is to help ensure that today’s children can also dream of competing at a World Championships in Falun,” says Björn Sandström.

The sustainability programme will be developed using ISO 20121 as its guiding framework.

“Hosting a World Championships brings unforgettable experiences, but it also comes with great responsibility. Travel, food and beverages, the working environment for employees and volunteers, our impact on the local environment, and an ever-changing global context are just some of the sustainability issues that will be central in the lead-up to Falun 2027.”

An important part of the sustainability programme will be listening to the people and organisations affected by the Championships. That is why Falun 2027 invites stakeholders to participate in stakeholder dialogue sessions on 18 and 20 August.
