Falun Municipality, the Swedish Ski Association, Skid-VM i Falun 2027 AB and the International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) have now signed the Hosting Contract, the agreement that outlines the commitments of each party before and during FIS Nordic World Ski Championships 2027.
The process of finalizing the Hosting Contract has taken a long time, and the signing parties have worked closely together to reach this point. It has been a fruitful process, culminating in an agreement for 2027 World Championships. The contract is detailed and mainly concerns the conditions for the organizer and the compensation from FIS.
Skid-VM I Falun 2027 AB is guaranteed 13.3 million CHF in organizer compensation from FIS (equivalent to approximately 160 million SEK as of today), which is the same amount as for the two most recent World Ski Championships in Nordic disciplines (Planica 2023 and Trondheim 2025). The sum could be higher if FIS sells rights beyond the estimated amount.
Ahead of 2027, the safety has been given higher priority than before, with significant effort put into the wording in this matter. Focus has also been placed on several points in the Technical Annex, where close dialogue has resulted in rewording of certain provisions that, among other things, reduce requirements and provide better flexibility in favor of Falun. The Technical Annex is now better suited to the excellent conditions that the Lugnet facility already offers. A concrete example of this is the lighting requirements for the ski jumping arena, which has been reduced from 1400 lux to 1000 lux in the contract.
– It is great that the organizer agreement is now in place. This is a prerequisite for being able to make more detailed calculations and plans, which is the next step. Now we know the opportunities we have to sell rights, and we can begin the commercial work of securing partnerships for the Ski World Championships, says Jonas Peterson, CEO.
For the local organization committee, the agreement for 2027 brings several improvements compared to 2015. The financial organizer compensation is larger, and if FIS sells more than estimated amount (budgeted revenue), 60 percent of the surplus (additional sales) will go to the organizer. Other improvements include a better force majeure clause and a reduction in the time required for the arena to be ready for inspection, from ten days (2015) to five days (2027). Overall, the contract now includes better wording adapted to Falun’s conditions and Swedish legislation.
With the agreement signed, a crucial foundation is now in place to focus on the preparatory operational work for the 2027 World Ski Championships.
– It feels really good that we’ve reached this point, and there has been a great dialogue around the agreement. We’re now moving forward with full force to create an unforgettable World Ski Championships in every dimension, says Jonas Peterson.
