Today our dear Norwegian neighbours are celebrating their National Day.
On this 17th of May, we want to highlight all Norwegian medals from Falun’s four previous World Championships. We also warmly welcome everyone, regardless of nationality, to Falun this winter to follow the chase for new World Championship medals.
As you know, 17 May is Norway’s National Day. We at Falun 2027 are celebrating our Norwegian friends by compiling all Norwegian medal winners from our previous World Championships (1954, 1974, 1993 and 2015).
At the 1954 World Championships, Norway’s only medals came in Nordic combined – and they came as a full set. Sverre Stenersen won gold ahead of Gunder Gundersen, and in third place it was also Norwegian, thanks to Kjetil Mårdalen.
When Falun hosted the 1974 World Championships, Norway won two medals. Magne Myrmo was involved in both. He won the 15 km race one second ahead of East German Gerhard Grimmer, becoming the last world champion on wooden skis. Myrmo also skied the opening leg in the Norwegian relay team that took bronze.

In the two most recent World Championships in Falun, Norwegian podium appearances have been far more frequent. On both occasions, Norway topped the medal table. In 1993, Norway won six gold medals. Bjørn Dæhlie took three of them (pursuit, 30 km and relay). He also won bronze in the 50 km race.
Espen Bredesen was the star of the large hill ski jumping events, winning both individually and in the team competition.
Norwegian success became even greater the last time Falun hosted the World Championships. A total of eleven gold medals were won by Norway. Petter Northug claimed four golds (sprint, sprint relay, relay and 50 km). In addition, Marit Bjørgen, Therese Johaug and Rune Velta each won double gold.
On 24 February 2027, the chase for new medals in Falun begins.
A warm welcome to experience the World Championship festival in person!
