The World Ski Championship beanie design revealed
Plans for the unique championship beanie were first announced in April. Inspired by the long tradition of patterned parish caps in Dalarna, the design pays tribute to a distinctive piece of local cultural heritage. These traditional knitted caps became powerful symbols of regional identity during the 1970s, often featuring parish crests and locally inspired colors.
The new World Championship beanie will be knitted in Santa red, dove blue, navy blue, ochre yellow, and natural white. It will be made using wool from Swedish finewool sheep, renowned for its softness and quality, with yarn spun and dyed by the historic Wålstedts mill in Dala-Floda.
More than 550 people from across Sweden — and even several applicants from abroad — applied for the opportunity to take part in the project. The final selection has now been completed, and the 190 chosen knitters will be informed today. Work on the hats officially begins in August with a “Stickoff” event, where participants will receive yarn and knitting patterns.
– The pattern for the World Championship beanie is based on a cap from Bjursås dating back to the mid-1800s that is preserved in our collections,” said Anna-Karin Jobs Arnberg, Head of Textiles at Dalarnas museum. “We have created a modern interpretation inspired both by traditional color choices and by the visual identity of Falun 2027. Thanks to the incredible commitment from sheep farmers, the spinning mill, and knitters, we are now ready to begin production.
According to organizers, the beanie is intended to become a lasting symbol of both the championships and the Dalarna region. Medalists will also receive the story behind the beanie in English, helping to share its cultural significance with an international audience.
– The World Championship beanie will carry the legacy of the event long after the competitions have ended, said Niclas Johansson, Head of Ceremonies for Falun 2027.
Knitting kits for the public are expected to go on sale later this autumn, allowing fans to make their own championship beanie ahead of the festivities, which begin in Falun on February 24, 2027.
