Thrilling showdown in the Large Hill – Lanišek steps onto the top of the podium

He finished second in the Normal Hill in yesterday’s competition. Today, Slovenia’s Anže Lanišek won the World Cup event in the Large Hill at Lugnet.
— I’m very pleased with my performance, said the 29-year-old Slovenian.

Another thrilling VIESSMANN FIS Ski Jumping World Cup competition unfolded as the men took on the Large Hill at Lugnet. In the first round, the spectators watched yesterday’s winner, Stefan Kraft of Austria, take the lead with an impressive jump of 133 meters, followed closely by Slovenia’s Anže Lanišek.

Lanišek followed up his first-round jump of 129 meters with 128.5 meters in the second round — a performance that proved enough to secure the victory. Kraft’s second jump reached 119 meters, meaning Lanišek leaves Falun with a win in the Large Hill and a second place in the Normal Hill. These results move him into the overall World Cup lead, 22 points ahead of Stefan Kraft.

How do you view today’s victory?
— It was a very good performance. I tried to stay calm and focus on my jumping, and I think I managed that well, Lanišek said, adding:
— It’s my first time here, and these are great hills. I like both of them. And today we even got to experience both a beautiful sunrise and a beautiful sunset, Lanišek said with a smile.

What does this victory mean with the World Championships coming here to Falun next season?
— I hope to be able to fight for medals when the World Ski Championships take place here, but that’s still far away. For now, I’m looking forward to the upcoming competitions in Finland, said Lanišek, who won by three points over 19-year-old Austrian Stephan Embacher and by 4.2 points over his Slovenian teammate Domen Prevc.

Prevc had quite a turbulent day after a fall during the training round. But he not only returned to the competition hill — he made it all the way to the World Cup podium.

The world’s top male ski jumpers now move on to competitions in Ruka, Finland, this coming weekend.
But World Cup action will continue in the Lugnet ski jumps in the coming days. Next up are the women’s competitions, with the first event starting on Friday at 15:45.
